Adamas (Milos)

Posted by

Adamas has been the ferry port of Milos for several years and with around 5,000 inhabitants it is now the largest municipality on the island. Adamas is located in the large Ormos Miliou bay of Milos. If you look out to sea, you would think it was a large inland lake. Due to its sheltered location, Adamas offers a safer ferry port and beaches that are almost always free of high waves.

Tip: Our favorite guesthouse on Milos: Malion Rooms

In Adamas, as in all of Milos, things are rather quiet. Outside the town there is a small sandy beach in either direction. Both are OK, but would certainly not win a beauty prize. See also: Beaches on Milos

There is a wide promenade along the harbor with the tourist information, travel agencies, restaurants and cafes. A recommended tavern in Adamas is Flisvos, about 50 meters to the right of the ferry dock. The nightlife with bars, discos and cafes is mainly limited to the high season. In spring and autumn it is rather quiet at night in Adamas on Milos.

Staying in Adamas / Milos

I stayed at the Semiramis guesthouse. In May 2017 I paid 35 euros for a superior room (large balcony, WiFi, air conditioning, etc.) from the very nice landlord Petros. According to him, the rooms cost 60 euros in summer. He also owns the Georgantas hotel. Both hotels are very centrally located near the road to Plaka, the Semiramis in a very quiet side street. Unfortunately, there are few cheap rooms in Adamas. In summer you should definitely expect to pay at least 40 euros – maybe a little more in the absolute peak season. Even in the low season it is difficult to find something for under 30 euros in Adamas – accommodation in other places on Milos is usually cheaper.

The modern mining museum of Milos is very interesting (about 300 meters from the center of Adamas along the sea). The various mines, stones and the geology of the island are well described here. Stones and some mining machines are on display. An interesting film about mining on Milos is shown in the basement. Opening hours daily from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Unfortunately, the museum now charges €3 for admission – until recently, admission was free.

Still no hotel in Adamas on Milos?

There are more than a hundred hotels on Milos. In our opinion, the best overview is on Booking.com. Here you can sort the accommodations by price or only display accommodations in a specific place on the island. The hotels can be booked quickly and easily on Booking.com, and there are also many holiday apartments.

The tourist information office of Milos (unfortunately only open at the end of May) and the public toilets are located in the building directly opposite the port. Ferry tickets are available in several travel agencies right at the port. Ferries depart daily to the island of Sifnos, the island of Serifos and to Athens – several times a week to Folegandros, Sikinos, Syros, Paros and some other islands. Most ferries to Kimolos (2-4 per day) depart from Pollonia.

Milos Island: 2 great tours by boat or bus

We have selected the 2 best tours (day trips) on Milos for you, which can be booked online on a well-known website:

1. Great tour by sailing boat around Milos (10 hours, tour including snorkeling and food): More information and booking (best reviews from participants)

2. Bus tour highlights of Milos (8 hours): More information and booking (great tour on an interesting island)

The bus station in Milos is about 100 meters away at the start of the road towards Plaka. In summer, buses run every hour from Adamas up to Plaka, stopping in Tripiti. 5-10 times a day (depending on the season) to Pollonia and several times a day to the beaches on the south coast of Milos. Unfortunately, there are hardly any buses until mid-May – only to Plaka (every 2 hours) and 2 times a day to Pollonia.

There are some quite expensive supermarkets in Adamas that seem to coordinate their opening times. When I visited, all three were closed by 7 p.m., but almost all the other shops were open. The best supermarket is Atlantis, but it is also quite crowded and expensive.

Next to the ferry dock in Adamas, the excursion boats are moored next to each other, and during the season they offer exciting island tours around Milos with a detour to Kimolos every day. A round trip with the larger boats costs about 25 euros, the smaller boats are about twice as expensive. The small boats have the great advantage that they can get much closer to the interesting rocks of Milos‘ coast.
